Some playing with the Life algorithm. AudibleLife gives a graphic representation of the creation and destruction of cells. FadingTrails is a visual, and AutoGrinder is a pseudo-random audio generator. The downloadable package is a zipped folder. There's also a version without SDL if you're sure you have it. Note the useful keys in AudibleLife:
P pause
S seed (randomly seed the algorithm)
C clear (you can then draw seed with mouse
R ring modulation for some audio variety
The executables are windows but the code is cross-platform. I just don't have a Mac at the moment to compile it. UPDATE: I now have a nice little Macbook which I intend to write some iPhone programs on. It would be easy to do a Mac SDL version. Maybe more fun to do an iPhone version though.
